"Bamboo" and "Zhu" are homophones that mean "best wishes."

Firecrackers were originally made of bamboo and, when lit, made a "booming" popping sound, which was thought to ward off demons and protect people's peace and happiness. Fireworks have thus become a must-have festive item during the festival.

Among the many auspicious motifs are images of children setting off firecrackers to express "blessing and peace"; the combination of bamboo and other auspicious objects is also frequently used to express people's desire for auspicious happiness.
