Many people believe that fate is set in stone, that no matter what they do, their destiny is already written. But history and real-life experiences tell a different story—one of transformation, resilience, and the power of self-determination.
One of the most famous examples is the story of Yuan Liaofan, an ancient scholar whose life changed dramatically through conscious effort and good deeds.
The Prophecy That Almost Defined His Life
As a young man, Yuan Liaofan met a fortune teller who read his fate and told him three harsh truths:
He would never have children.
He would never achieve high status or wealth.
His life was predetermined, and nothing could change it.
Yuan, believing in the prophecy, decided there was no point in striving for success. He stopped studying, lost motivation, and resigned himself to fate. But then, something extraordinary happened.
A Meeting That Changed Everything
During a period of self-doubt and stagnation, Yuan encountered Chan Master Yungu, a Buddhist monk with deep wisdom. Seeing Yuan’s potential, the master asked, “Do you want to change your fate?”
Yuan, intrigued but skeptical, replied, “Of course! But how?”
Master Yungu simply said, “Perform 3,000 good deeds, and your fate will transform.”
The Path to a New Destiny
At first, Yuan wasn’t sure if it would work, but he decided to give it a try—after all, he had nothing to lose. He began consciously doing good deeds, helping others, and cultivating kindness.
By the time he had completed 200 good deeds, he passed the imperial exam and secured an official government position.
By the time he had reached 1,000 good deeds, he had a flourishing family and many children—contrary to the original prophecy.
After completing 3,000 good deeds, he lived a long and prosperous life, defying everything the fortune teller had predicted.
The Lesson: You Hold the Power to Change
Yuan Liaofan’s story teaches us that while fate may seem predetermined, our actions can reshape our destiny. Through self-improvement, perseverance, and acts of kindness, we can break through limitations and achieve the life we desire.
So, the next time you feel stuck or believe things are beyond your control, remember this:
Your fate is in your hands. What you do today shapes your tomorrow.
