What is this about?
Like Lu and Xun, this Gua is also meant to be a lesson given by the Duke of Zhou to his young nephew, King Cheng Wang. It teaches him to please his subjects by making them feel content and satisfied.

Progressive smoothness. It is advantageous to be firm and correct. As king, Cheng Wang learned that pleasing others is reciprocated by unwavering loyalty, peace, and prosperity. Being benevolent is the right approach to leading/ parenting; persisting with this attitude will inspire harmonious relationships among your staff/family.

Yang on Line 1: Pleasing people with friendly gestures is fortunate. A pleasant demeanour conveys your sincerity, goodwill, and good intentions. Smile! Look people in the eye when you speak to them. Uncross your arms and legs. Appear open and comfortable. Your radiance will comfort others.
58.2 九二孚兌。悔亡
Yang on Line 2: Pleasing people with sincerity is fortunate. Regrettable events will be forgotten. If a misunderstanding has caused tension between you and your friends/ family/ staff/ associates, iron it out sincerely. It is the only way to remove a grudge and
hurt feelings.
58.3 六三來兌。凶
Yin on Line 3: Pleasing people with empty words brings misfortune. Pleasing or placating your friends/family/staff/associates with flowery language and superficial intent will backfire. You will shoot yourself in the foot. Be true to yourself and them.
58.4 九四商兌未寧。介疾有喜
Yang on Line 4. Pleasing people through discussion sometimes brings disagreement. To resolve the problem, find its cause. Discussion often brings out differing opinions. Mediate the conversation. Taking the middle road will help lead to a resolution.

Yang on Line 5: Trusting someone who seeks to hurt you is dangerous. Trusting a wolf in sheep's clothing is foolhardy. Know who your friends and foes are before you confide in them.

Yin on line 6. Please people through temptation. Entice your supporters. Seduce your mate. Place a carrot stick before them, and they will leap to help you. Reward a job well done.
