Be as resolute as a mare. The nobleman may feel uncertain at first but will ultimately benefit. Just like the earth nurtures all living things, you can create and bring forth new beginnings. Stay loyal and hardworking, like a mare. Remain humble and modest. Adhere to your beliefs and grow from your encounters. If you are puzzled by the unfolding events, do not lose hope. The right way will reveal itself to you. Form alliances with individuals from the southwest (Zhou) and distance yourself from those in the northeast (the Shang).
2.01 用六利永貞
All Lines are Six: Perseverance paves the path forward. The arrangement of six yin lines in this hexagram signifies the correct approach to serving the king. Demonstrating loyalty, humility, integrity, and unwavering diligence will lead to your advancement. The entire hexagram will transition to Chien when all six lines transform into old yin (six). It is essential to carefully consider the meaning of each line of text and how they relate to Chien.
2.1 初六履霜。堅冰至
Yin on Line 1: Step carefully on the frost. Over time, it will turn into solid ice. King Wen demonstrated vigilance and composure during his time in the Shang dynasty. Reflect before making a move. Having unwavering determination will contribute to building a solid base.
2.2 六二直方大。不習无不利
Yin on Line 2: The character is upright, honest, and impressive. Lack of experience should not be seen as a disadvantage. This statement likely alludes to the Duke of Zhou, who initially lacked experience leading the revolt against the Shang dynasty. With integrity, a lack of knowledge is not a hindrance. Proceed confidently.
2.3 六三含章。可貞。或從王事。无成有終
Yin on Line 3: People of integrity adhere to their principles. A career in politics holds potential. While he may not emerge victorious, he will earn respect for his efforts. Despite not holding the rightful position of authority in the Zhou dynasty, the Duke of Zhou's support was recognised and appreciated. It is not necessary to have a leadership position to receive respect and recognition. Find pride in your current role.
2.4 六四括囊。无咎无譽
Yin on Line 4: The bag is closed. There will be neither praise nor criticism. This statement cautions those in proximity to King Shang, Zhou Wang. King Wen managed to escape King Shang's harsh treatment by presenting himself as harmless. King Wen kept his skills hidden like a tied sack conceals its contents. Even if your achievements are modest, you will not face defeat or reprimand.
2.5 六五黃裳;元吉
Yin on Line 5: Put on the high-ranking officers' yellow lower garment. This signifies the start of a promising career. This statement suggests that the author had a prosperous political journey, likely alluding to the Duke of Zhou, King Wu's brother. A prosperous future awaits you.
2.6 上六龍戰于野。其血玄黃
Yin on Line 6: Dragons battle in the wilderness. The blood is dark yellow. Referring to the fight between King Shang (old ruler) and King Zhou (new ruler), the dark yellow blood signifies the beginning of a new era. King Wu (King Wen's son) killed King Shang, thus establishing the Zhou dynasty. The Duke of Zhou witnessed the assassination. You will notice a power struggle. The winner will make the enterprise prosperous.
