Xu means waiting, especially with anticipation.
What is this?
This Gua describes how the Zhou leaders moved their tribe several times to find the most favourable site to increase their prosperity. Eventually, they settled near present-day Xi'an, where they prepared for the uprising against the Shang. Neighbouring tribes joined this much-anticipated ambition.

Yang on Line 1: Staying in the distant outskirts requires perseverance. There will be no mistake. Zhou distanced themselves from the Shang Capital, where they were subjected to terror by the tyrant King Shang. Although they were far enough to avoid his fury, there was still much pressure and anticipation of danger. Stay away from those who pose a threat to you. Wait with patience. For the time being, it is the only thing you can do.
Yang on Line 2: Waiting on sand will cause minor discontent. Eventually, there will be a fortune. Zhou was once removed to a Sandy place near a river. Although the water was difficult to retain, it was still hospitable. You are full of action. While the result may not be immediate, it will eventually come. Keep up the momentum.
Yang on Line 3: Waiting in the mud will invite bandits. Building a capital isolated from neighbouring allies was not beneficial for Zhou. You are exposed to those who will take advantage of your vulnerability; you are hidden from benefactors and supporters who can help further your cause. You are spinning your wheels, going nowhere fast without like-minded people's assistance. You are stuck.
Yin on Line 4: Waiting in a dangerous cave is life-threatening. In ancient China, many people lived in caves. Upon the first rumbling of a landslide, the residents hurried to escape. The danger is looming! Act quickly. Leave your current relationship. Abandon any undertaking. It is not going to work.
Yang on Line 5: Waiting with an ambulance of food and wine is fortunate only if there is perseverance. This line refers to the Zhou moving to their final campsite, where natural conditions proved advantageous. Celebrate! You are in the right place/ job/ relationship. Wait patiently for developments. Good things are coming your way.
Yin on Line 6: Enter the cave. Three unexpected guests are coming. Welcoming them with respect will bring prosperity. Neighbouring tribes wished to join the Zhou's uprising against the Shang's oppression. You will encounter an unforeseen opportunity. Embrace a new job, relationship, or business partnership/ alliance with open arms.
