Zhong Kui attains Tao: Zhong Kui, also known as Zhengnan, was from the Zhongnan Mountain and lived during the Tang Dynasty. He went to the capital to take the imperial examination and earned the top score. However, he was ugly, with a leonine face, ringed eyes, and a beard like iron. When Emperor Dezong of Tang saw him, he was frightened and wanted to revoke his title. The Prime Minister, Lu Qi, agreed with the emperor. Zhong Kui hit Lu Qi, and Emperor Dezong ordered his arrest. Zhong Kui seized a sword and committed suicide. Lu Yi paid homage and posthumously conferred on him the title of Demon-expelling Deity. Zhong Kui thought that demons and ghosts must be in the netherworld, so he went to slay them. The King of Hell said: "The difference between humans and ghosts lies only in a moment of thought. A righteous ghost can become a god, while a wicked person can become a ghost." Zhong realised the truth. Ten Yama Kings were managing the ghosts in the netherworld. So, he returned to the world of the living to slay demons and became the great king of ghost-catching.
