陶朱歸五湖。 （范蠡歸湖）春秋。 范蠡。 字少伯。 吳人。 與文種同為越大夫。 吳滅越。 蠡與種。 為越王勾踐畫策。 卑詞請成。 復求民間美女。 得西施進於吳。 迨滅吳。 功成。 蠡知勾踐可與同患難。 不可共安樂。 乃辭官。 扁舟泛五湖。 止於陶。 復以謀生致富。 稱陶朱公。 凡三徙。 方成名。 後不知所終。
Tao Zhu returns to the Five Lakes. (Fan Li returns to the lake) During the spring and autumn period, Fan Li styled Shaobo, who was from Wu and served as a minister of Yue along with Wen Zhong. When Wu destroyed Yue, Li and Zhong devised strategies for King Goujian of Yue and, with humble words, asked for peace. They also requested beautiful women from among the ordinary people and thus obtained Xi Shi, who was sent to Wu. After the destruction of Wu, having achieved his purpose, Li knew that Goujian could share hardships but not peaceful times. So, he resigned his post and set off in a small boat to roam the Five Lakes. He settled in Tao again and used his strategies to become rich; hence, he became known as Tao Zhu Gong. After three moves, he finally made a name for himself. His whereabouts after that are unknown.
