Allegory
During the Northern Zhou Dynasty, under Emperor Wu, the three teachings (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism) were at odds with each other. The emperor convened a large assembly for debate. After three rounds of argument, each claimed that the truth was in their teaching and that the principle resided within their side. The dispute continued without an end or conclusion. This was a foolish matter. Later, Buddhism became the mainstream faith among the Chinese people. There is also a theory that the three teachings share the exact origin.
