地基主 Ritual Guide for Opening Door

Introduction:

地基主 (Dì Jī Zhǔ) is the guardian deity of homes and residences, responsible for protecting the household's peace and ensuring smooth living.


Purpose and Intention of the Ritual:

The primary purpose of this ritual is to pray during this opening door ceremony for the family's peace and harmony and to prevent evil spirits from invading the home.


Opening door

Timing:

Perform the ritual in the morning, selecting an auspicious time or the best available time of the day.


Location:

The worship is conducted within the home. Prepare a portable table for the offerings.


Preparation of Offerings:


Three types of fruits

  • Prosperity cake (發粿 Fāgāo)

  • Cakes or pastries

  • Five red wine cups

  • Red plates for the offerings

  • Two red candles

  • Joss sticks

  • Written prayer (疏文 Shū Wén)

  • Joss papers (including 天金 Tiānjīn, 大百壽金 Dàbǎishòujīn, 壽金 Shòujīn, 刈金 Yìjīn, 福金 Fújīn, 五路財神金 Wǔlù Cáishénjīn)

Prayer Message:

All participants should recite the prayer together. An example prayer could be:


"呼請地基主,信士 xx 恭請地基主保佑平安大發財。"

(Hū qǐng Dì Jī Zhǔ, dìzǐ [name] gōng qǐng Dì Jī Zhǔ bǎoyòu píng'ān dà fācái.)


(Translation: "Calling upon the guardian deity of my house, devotee [name] respectfully requests the guardian deity of my house to bless the family with peace and prosperity.")


Worship Procedure:

  • Neatly arrange the offerings on the table.

  • Maintain a sincere attitude as you light the candles and incense.

  • Hold the incense in hand, and with the purpose of the worship in mind, recite the prayer message.

  • Move to all four corners of the house, bowing and reciting the prayer message, proceeding clockwise.

  • Place the incense in the 發粿 (Fāgāo).

  • Burn the joss papers.

  • After the ritual, bow three times to the deity, then remove the offerings.

由信士【姓名】及家人,手執三柱清香,誠心恭請地基主尊神到來降臨,護佑家宅平安順遂。


信士【姓名】住址為新加坡【地址】。今逢農曆X月X日X時,為祈求家宅安康、諸事吉祥之時。


信士【姓名】及家人,誠心敬備鮮花、水果、清茶、疏文等供品,供奉地基主尊神鑑納。


祈求地基主尊神護佑本宅,家人平安、生活順遂、財源廣進、福祿壽全。


謹疏以聞。



English Version


On this auspicious day and time,


The devotee, [Name], and their family respectfully hold three incense sticks and sincerely invite the Guardian Deity of the house (Dì Jī Zhǔ) to descend and bless this home with peace and smooth living.


The devotee, [Name], residing at [Address] in Singapore, now offers this prayer on the [Xth day of Xth lunar month] at [Xth hour], to seek blessings for the well-being and good fortune of this household.


The devotee, [Name], and their family have sincerely prepared offerings of fresh flowers, fruits, tea, and a written prayer to honour and present to the Guardian Deity of the land.


We humbly ask the Guardian Deity to protect this home, grant peace to the family, ensure smooth living, bring abundant wealth, and bless us with health, longevity, and prosperity.
